Sometimes if your children are getting left behind at school you have to start to teach readingYour children must learn to read and they must stay at the same reading level as they other students in the class. If not you should intervene and start to teach reading to your child. Now teaching reading is not too difficult it just takes time. There is no magic bullet, there is only the time you put in. Usually if your child is falling behind in reading it is a phonics problem. So to begin to teach reading to your child find a phonics program that will suit you and your child. There are basically two types of programs, offline and online. The first one is to just buy a book, or a set of books like the Scholastic Phonics Readers or Frontline Phonics. There are many good phonics books out there but check the library first and try a few out, because some books will not work for you and you child.

I have brought many books and the only ones that worked for my daughter were the Scholastic Phonics Readers and a Montessori ecourse. With this ecourse you had to make up sandpaper letters and these letters made a big difference in planting the phonics sounds and letters in my daughter’s mind. If you are not into books and reading you can try an online course. These are completely online, you get on the site and away you go. Very efficient for fast pickup of phonics. Your child can listen online and repeat. For a complete phonics program try Hooked On Phonics. This is a complete set that starts off at beginner level and covers all the different phonic combinations. To teach reading your child has to know the 44 different phonic sounds and how to blend them to make words. For more information about phonics courses I recommend including a Montessori course see our Teach Reading page.
