The Montessori approach is excellent and she does not recommend reading books until the children have a good grasp of words. With the Montessori approach everything is taught phonically with tracing sandpaper letters, even the so-called sight words. So when the children start reading, they can. There is one problem and that is one of understanding. The children have learnt the mechanics of reading and they can read nearly perfectly, but some do not understand what they are reading. You must explain all the words as you teach them so the children can put it all together in their minds.

After the child can read words I start using the Scholastic Phonic Readers books as they are easy to understand and there is a lot of repetition. The children love these books as the story can stretch over 3 or more books, so the phonics tale carries on over several books. The characters in the story stay the same only the situation changes. I use this course for teaching phonics, it uses the Maria Montessori method of teaching reading and writing, and I recommend it to anyone who is teaching reading. For more information about the phonics products I recommend see our teach reading page. To have a chat to other parents and to find out more about learning to read go to our forum.
