                                                                                                                                     teaching elementary reading

When teaching elementary reading you should concentrate on reading comprehension

Children with elementary reading skills usually can read but the main problem is with understanding what they are reading. After the child has

learnt phonics they should be able to accurately read and pronounce the written word. Their limiting factor is understanding the meaning of the words and sentences.

Here you have to be available to explain what your children donít know.

So you must encourage your children to ask questions. Never and I mean never say that is stupid question, as that might put your child off asking questions and you donít want that. Also your children look up to you so you must answer the questions as best you can, or if you canít answer say you will find the answer.

This is the time to introduce dictionaries and how to use them. If you show your kids know how to use a dictionary then when they ask you about a word, you can say look it up in the dictionary. You only come in when the word is not in the dictionary or when the question is about sentence structure or grammar.

You have heard that reading in bed to your children is one of the best things you can do - now you know why.

When you read books to your children they are learning all about sentence structure and grammar. Then when they start to read they already know a lot about how sentences fit together. Another thing, always ask your child what is happening in the story to see if she understands what the story is all about. Because this way you will know if your child is reading correctly.

For more information about phonics courses I recommend including a Montessori course see our Teach Reading page.
